Light and Electron Microscope Studies of Mycobacterium—mycobacteriophage Interactions

چکیده
The process of multiplication of mycobacteriophage B-1 in its host cell was studied by means of an improved technic of ultrathin sectioning. The appearance of the nuclear apparatus was not altered throughout the latent period. Phage-shaped dense particles appeared about 30 minutes after infection in less dense areas neighboring the nuclear apparatus and occasionally at the margin of the nuclear apparatus. The less dense areas, which may correspond to the phage multiplication foci according to the authors' interpretation, were not filled with such arrays of fine-stranded fibrils as are seen in the nuclear apparatus. Empty phage heads could frequently be seen within and outside the lysed cells, along with the mature phage particles, at the end of the latent period. Moreover, it was indicated that empty head membranes may possibly exist within the cells during the latent period

In the previous experiments (Takeya et al., 1959b) the interactions of Mycobacterium avium with mycobacteriophage B-1 were studied by cyttilogical techniques, and the latent period of the B-1 phage infecting the host cell was determined under the conditions used in the preparation for electron microscopy. The present paper deals with the results of experiments on the interactions of mycobacteri...

Several mycobacteriophages active against mycobacteria have been isolated by Takeya and Yoshimura (1957) using the soil-enrichment technique. Among these phages, B-1 was found to have the broadest host range including virulent strains of tubercle bacilli. In the present investigation the interactions between mycobacteriophage B-1 and its host strain Mycobacterium avium were examined under the l...

UNLABELLED Mycobacteriophages are viruses that infect mycobacterial hosts and are prevalent in the environment. Nearly 700 mycobacteriophage genomes have been completely sequenced, revealing considerable diversity and genetic novelty. Here, we have determined the protein complement of mycobacteriophage Giles by mass spectrometry and mapped its genome-wide protein interactome to help elucidate t...

The high incidence of Mycobacterium infection, notably multidrug-resistant M. tuberculosis infection, has become a significant public health concern worldwide. In this study, we isolate and analyze a mycobacteriophage, BTCU-1, and a foundational study was performed to evaluate the antimycobacterial activity of BTCU-1 and its cloned lytic endolysins. Using Mycobacterium smegmatis as host, a myco...

Bacteriophages are the viruses of bacteria, which have contributed extensively to our understanding of life and modern biology. The phage-mediated bacterial growth inhibition represents immense untapped source for novel antimicrobials. Insights into the interaction between mycobacteriophage and Mycobacterium host will inform better utilizing of mycobacteriophage. In this study, RNA sequencing t...
